Lyons Magnus Expands Voluntary Recall Of Limited Premier Protein Ready-to-drink Shakes

The health and safety of our consumers is our number one priority. Based on updated guidance from our co-manufacturer, Premier Nutrition Company is expanding the voluntary recall of its Premier Protein 11oz ready-to-drink shakes to include older lot codes, as well as the potential for microbial contamination from the organism Clostridium botulinum, although none has been found in products. Only Premier Protein shakes produced in 11oz cartons with “BT” in the lot code are affected. The expanded recall is aligned with our previous notice that only lots containing “BT” are affected, however, there are now additional “BT” lots included. The lot code can be found on the top of the carton or the side of a case and will look like “xxxxBT.” Only the following lot codes are impacted by the expanded voluntary recall:

This action is being conducted after one of the company’s processing partners, Lyons Magnus LLC, identified the potential spoilage and microbial contamination including from the organisms Cronobacter sakazakii and Clostridium botulinum, due to product not meeting commercial sterility requirements. The potential contamination is limited to shakes produced by Lyons Magnus at their Beloit, Wisconsin facility. The listed 11oz cartons are the only Premier Protein products affected by this recall.

We’re doing everything we can to correct this situation as quickly and safely as possible, and we are committed to providing our consumers with accurate, up-to-date information. Retail partners have been notified and we are working closely with our partners to remove affected product from shelves.

While infection related to Cronobacter sakazakii is rare, the common symptoms of illness could include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection, especially in young children younger than 1 year and vulnerable/immunocompromised populations who may be more susceptible to infection. The list of recalled products does not include products intended for infants (i.e., under the age of 1 year).

Clostridium botulinum has not been found in the affected products; however consumers are warned not to consume any of the recalled products even if they do not look or smell spoiled. Clostridium botulinum may cause a severe form of food poisoning. It can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness. Botulism poisoning can cause respiratory paralysis, resulting in death, unless assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation) is provided.
